Germanna Foundation Seeks Executive Director

The Organization: The Germanna Foundation, a 501(c)3 organization, is a center for the study of Virginia’s early 18th-century culture and exploration. Based in Virginia’s Piedmont region, the Germanna Foundation uses archaeological, historical, and genealogical research to further modern understanding of the American colonial past and the diverse cultures that met on the edges of the Virginia colony. The Germanna Foundation operates the Fort Germanna Visitor Center, Museum, & Library, the Germanna Memorial Garden, Historic Salubria, and Siegen Forest, all open to the public; and Hitt Farm, for which an interpretive plan is in development.

Position Overview: The Executive Director is a full-time position that reports to the Board of Trustees and oversees a staff of seven employees. The ideal candidate will provide vision and leadership to promote the Foundation’s archaeological, historical, and genealogical research and interpret its dispersed collection of essential sites. This person will ideally be well versed in today’s applications of public history.

Essential Job Functions:

          ·        Determine annual goals and identify key issues in collaboration with the President

          ·        Identify and cultivate candidates for a strong Board of Trustees

          ·        Fundraise at all levels, build strong relationships with significant donors

          ·        Manage and provide guidance to all staff; attract and retain first-rate talent

          ·        Engage with the community and provide positive public relations

          ·        Create and direct visionary programming to convey the significance of our historic sites

          ·        Provide sound financial management and administrative oversight

          ·        Oversee property maintenance and historic site development

          ·        Cultivate relationships with partner organizations

          ·        Other related duties as required

Key Qualifications:

  • Highly organized, detail-oriented

  • Excellent communication, effective listening, and positive interpersonal skills

  • Demonstrated use of current technologies

  • Excellent verbal and written skills

  • Strong public speaking skills and the ability to craft engaging lectures and programs

  • Understand current philanthropic trends and identify and cultivate potential funding sources

Desired Professional Characteristics:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher

  • Five years minimum museum experience

  • Familiarity with the fundraising environment in Virginia and beyond

Desired Personal Characteristics:

  • Integrity, trustworthiness, and credibility

  • Decision-making ability

  • Effective communication skills

  • Demonstrated passion for history and for sharing its stories
