GETTYSBURG FOUNDATION SEEKS CEO

PRESIDENT AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

The Gettysburg Foundation Board of Directors seeks a dynamic, visionary President and Chief Executive Officer to lead the organization into the future. In partnership with the National Park Service, the Gettysburg Foundation stewards one of the most important landmarks of American history. The hallowed ground of Gettysburg is woven deeply within the fabric of our nation, evoking a combination of pride, awe, and heartbreak like few other sites. The President & CEO has overall responsibility for leading the organization and operations of the Foundation. The President serves as a principal representative to the National Park Service at the Gettysburg National Military Park and Eisenhower National Historic Site and other key partners while also leading the Foundation’s philanthropic activities.

THE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION INCLUDE:

  • Provide visionary leadership to inspire and maintain a high-performance, efficient organization at all levels - including the Foundation’s senior management, staff, and volunteers.

  • Develop an effective, collaborative partnership with the National Park Service and its Superintendent in Gettysburg to promote a deeper appreciation of the importance of Gettysburg and the Civil War in our nation’s history.

  • Develop and implement fundraising strategies to diversify revenue and secure significant financial support from individuals, corporations, foundations, and government sources.

  • Develop a strategy for and oversee a successful capital campaign.

  • Ensure an outstanding experience for visitors of diverse backgrounds in a welcoming, friendly, and informative manner at all Foundation venues.

  • Introduce innovative programming and technologies to engage new and diverse audiences in the Gettysburg story.

  • Oversee operations of the LEED-Gold certified Gettysburg National Military Park Museum & Visitor Center and other Foundation-owned properties and historic sites and programs, including the Children of 1863 Museum, the George Spangler Farm and Field Hospital, the Gettysburg Lincoln Railroad Train Station, and the nationally recognized Gettysburg Leadership Institute.

  • Ensure fiscal responsibility and sustainability through sound management practices consistent with the long-term goals and health of the organization.

  • Engage the Board to leverage their expertise and networks in pursuing the Foundation’s objectives while supporting Board activities and initiatives.

  • Build and maintain effective relationships with other key partners, consistent with advancing the Foundation’s mission and key initiatives.

  • Actively represent the organization within the community, state, region, and nation.

  • Recruit, support, manage, and retain an outstanding staff that works collaboratively to achieve the organization’s goals.

  • Maintain and promote all Foundation properties to ensure their sustainability. 

EDUCATION/SPECIAL SKILLS/EXPERIENCE:

  • A graduate degree is preferred. A bachelor’s degree with relevant senior leadership experience is required.

  • Commitment to the Foundation’s mission and to the role of the Gettysburg National Military Park and Eisenhower National Historic Site as important American treasures and legacies.

  • Proven ability to maintain a strong relationship with diverse stakeholders, including board members, government agencies, donors, and community leaders.

  • Proven capability to nourish a partnership with the National Park Service through cooperation, collaboration, and compromise.

  • Significant experience in leading and managing an organization with a record of accomplishments and successful results.

  • Strong fundraising skills with demonstrated experience in successfully developing and implementing a comprehensive fundraising program, including individual, corporate, and foundation contributions.

  • A management style that is goal-oriented but flexible, respecting the capabilities and independence of volunteers and staff alike, demonstrating the ability to listen to and respect divergent views while providing a clear sense of direction.

  • An entrepreneurial approach to running a nonprofit organization as a successful business.

  • Successful experience in developing and managing a complex budget.

  • Ability to think strategically, tactically, and creatively.

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to effectively present, write, and listen.

  • Impeccable personal and professional integrity.

  • High energy level with dedication and perseverance in achieving agreed objectives and ability to inspire the organization at all levels.
